Anime Age Discrimination in SC? I woke up this morning and found this article in my local paper:
Comic Book Fan Claims Discrimination
Basically, this 43-year old anime/manga fan wanted to attend an anime club meeting at a Hilton Head, SC public library. However, the club was for teenagers only. He had become excited about the club when he saw a flier that said "anime/manga fans welcome!". But when he arrived he was told he couldn't attend because the program was for teens. The guy is saying that because the age limit was not posted on that particular flier (one of several different fliers) that he was discriminated against.
Now, I run an anime club through my local library and I've had this problem once or twice with local adults. I can't let them into regular meetings, but the marathons I throw once a season are open to the public.
Is this man right? Is the library right? Discuss.

I suppose there are two ways of looking at this. The legal way, and the reality way.
Since a public library is often funded by a combination of government funding and private donations, the case could be made that since it's this gentlemans tax dollars he has a valid grievance.
But this is just a technical legal distinction. He should have respect for the club's charter, being a teen oriented organization.
I'm 40 and I love anime and manga. But...I'm not a self righteous jerk like this guy. And besides, who would want to belong to a club that fundamentally wouldn't want them? You might be able to legally force an issue like this, but that doesn't make it right either.
My two cents....

I've noticed these clubs pop up all over the state lately, at the library. Even here we have one and it's only for teens. And in a way it is discriminatory, but there's nothing stopping this man from starting a club himself. Besides.. why would he want to hang out with a bunch of teenagers? Though I feel his strife. The anime scene is getting older and there really is no place for a lot of us to go but to stay held up in our living rooms or travel out of state and spend tons of money to attend a con. If it weren't for the meetings we have here, I would basicly have nothing at all. I can't afford to attend cons.
