Area 88 OVA Area 88 OVA
By Andromeda
Shin Kazama had a promising future. He was one of the top students at pilot school and had a promising career in Yamamoto Airlines waiting for him when he was done. Not only was a job waiting for him, but a young woman who he had fallen in love with. But all of that was snatched from Shin’s hands one fateful night when he trusted the wrong person.
After a major turn of event in Shin’s life, he finds himself a fighter pilot in a Foreign Legion in a desert land that is at civil war. There are only three ways to return home from this war, be in the service for three years, collect enough money by killing the enemy and destroying their bases, or by desertion which will lead to death if caught. So what does he choose? Does he kill, risk being killed, or stay stuck in the desert for three years?
Meet a group of misfits from all walks of life that fight along next to Shin either for the money or because they are running from something, learn how Shin ended up in the fight, and meet the love of his life struggling to find him. The lesson, be careful who you trust in life. They might not always have your best interest in mind and only out to further themselves while walking on the backs of others. It’s the classic tale of love, war and tragedy that we all love.
This retro anime will surprise those who have only watched anime released in the last few years. The drawing style alone is enough to turn some viewers away, but this will have you missing the action filled story of trust and betrayal and what a war can do to a person. Other than by the style the anime was drawn in, the opening theme is dated, but it’s a wonderful song with lyrics that perk your interest and prepare you for the story inside the cover.
This is a reintroduction by ADV with all new English dubbing. After having watched Area 88 and knowing how bad dubbing can go, I can assure you that they picked the right voice actors for the job. There wasn’t one voice that I disagreed with. And if you like this OAV then try the Area 88 TV Series.

I've seen the TV series, and I really liked it, but it also helps that I had a game for Super Nintendo called U.N. Squadron that was based off of this anime with the same characters, and whatnot.
I haven't had a chance to see the OVA yet. It looks as if you've watched the re-make. They also have an original OVA which dates back before the TV series quite a bit if I'm not mistaken.

No, this isn't a remake. This is the orignal OVA with better dubbing. I did research on it because I watched some of the TV series and it starts out quiet similar.

Gah, you're right. I got it mixed up. The TV series is a re-make of the OVA.
Andromeda- 06-17-2006
Yeah, so imagine my confusion when I started watching that.
"Wait.. didn't I already do this?" Rummages through my DVDs. "Err.. guess not. Weird." Then I looked up some info and talked to the guy who did the TV series review.
