Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z
By Andromeda
We all know what an impact Japanese animation has had in recent years on American animated shows. At some point a lot of us have wondered, what would one of the American made cartoons look like if it were given the Japanese Animation treatment. Let me introduce you to the new Power Puff Girls, Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z! Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z is a joint venture between Toei Animation, Aniplex, and Cartoon Network.
When Professor Utonium’s son Ken and their robotic dog Peach accidentally drop a sweet bun into the batch of Chemical X, a new chemical is created, Chemical Z. Could this be a good thing? Before it can be tested though, something strange starts to happen in the bay. Icebergs start appearing and hail fall in heavy sheets, but it's the wrong season! Yet it’s not just in Japan this is happening, but all over the world.
With a call from the Mayor, Ken decides to use the chemical X in a ray machine, against his father’s… err the Professor’s wishes and shoots the icebergs. Celebrate!, the icebergs are destroyed, but what’s this? Some strange lights break away from the beam after impact and land all over the city.
Just then, Momoko, after going on a junk food buying spree, saves a little girl in the park from getting hit by this strange ray of light. Similarly, Miyako, after going to one of her favorite clothing stores, is also struck by this strange light. Also Kaoru, a skate boarding tom boy is the final one hit by one of these strange lights. The three of them, having nothing in common but the school they go to, transform into super heroines.
Momoko has always wanted to be a super heroine, and with the transformation phrase, Hyper Blossom, she becomes Blossom. Soon after though, animals from the zoo escape and this strange talking monkey, following the smell of sweets on a park bench encounters Blossom. Seeing the dark aura around the talking monkey, Blossom knows he’s evil and must stop this monster, especially before he eats all her sweets and candy!
Miyako on the other hand, transforming after saying the transformation phrase, Rolling Bubbles, becomes Bubbles. Bubbles though thinks the outfit she’s now wearing is uber cute! She seems a bit naive about the whole situation and goes off skipping along, like nothing happened. She is 100% a girly girl who loves shopping and fashion.
Kaoru on the other hand is not very happy about this transformation. Having said the phrase, Powered Buttercup, she becomes the third Powerpuff Z girl, Buttercup. Being the tomboy that she is, she totally detests wearing the skirt of her new outfit and blames it on the sniffles and sneezes she’s now suffering from.
Other than being extremely cute with this Japanese makeover, the story of how they came to be is much more fitting, in my opinion. And now, they have secret identities to keep from their classmates and families. Another thing that I like is that each of them has a weapon. Blossom’s weapon is a yo-yo, Bubbles is a large bubble wand, and Buttercup has this huge war hammer type thing. Each one suits the character perfectly.
I do like how they kept the attitudes of the girls true to the original Powerpuff Girls, along with the other main characters such as the Professor, the Mayor’s Secretary, and the Mayor. The added bonus is the Professor’s son. During the first three episodes though, there’s no mention of a mother.
Also within the first three episodes, the only real villain you will meet, is Mojo. In the third episode though, Princess does make an appearance in the girl’s class. With 52 episodes planned to be aired, they do have to spread out the villains quite well. From the opening sequence though, you get to see all of them in a group shot.
A plus to this new series is the soundtrack. The music is very upbeat. Each girl gets their own transformation song. After seeing the first episode and hearing the opening and ending themes, I wanted the soundtrack. All it took was hearing the music once to decide that. The art is wonderful as well, bright and bubbly, perfect for this series about three young bubbly girls.
This anime series is also very kid friendly and I would recommend it for any child. Of course, they’d have to be pretty fast readers for subtitles, unless they understood Japanese. The outfits the girls wear make terrific costumes for any Convention or for Halloween.

Sounds awesome! Always liked the PPG's. So a japanese remake that stays as faithfull to the original as you describe should be awesome as well.

The only thing they didn't stay true with was how the girls came to be and they aren't related, they each have their own family.
