Even if they have a FAQ or somewhere to read whats going on, there are still alot of people who still ask. I mean, in stores there are signs to where to go to get what you need, there are still people who ask clerks for information even if there is a sign placed. And the clerks don't go develop a god complex and start acting like an a$$ towards the customers. Ontop of that, some sites don't give any information at all, much less an update. Take Boxtorrents for example. As you know, they've been having a problem with people not being able to join, and there is no official information on it on the message boards. The only way people are able to figure this stuff out, is to ask.

I hate irc. >_< and I won't spend my time learning how to use it either.
As for the few eps per DVD. Gantz is another good example of that. Though.. it is slightly cheaper than a normaly DVD. But still.
Zero0079- 04-17-2006
That's why it's sometimes best to buy the Imported Asian DVD's since they pack more Epsidoes, and are significantly cheaper. If i were to want to start up a collection of a long series, i would only buy the volumes i really want which would be the domestic version, and the ones that are just filler episodes, i would buy the imported version (thats mostly if i have a box that i want to fill up, or if i just want to see the filler episodes). And if the covers are different, i would just take out the Imported versions cover, and download the domestic versions cover, print it on gloss paper at Kinkos or Frys and it'll look just like the Domestic version.
Anyway, what pisses me off the most, is how they overinflate not only the new series, but old ones like Evangelion, which goes around 25-30 bucks, regardless of the supply, and how really easy it is to manufacture.
BodyOrgan- 04-17-2006
Zero0079, there is a flaw in your argument. First off it's the clerks job to help you, so whether or not they want to they must or the consequences could get them fired. On the fansubbing scence it is not the fansubbers job to help you. If they do it at all then it is out of the kindness of their hearts.
The argument about boxtorrents is legit though since they haven't provided information.
Zero0079- 04-17-2006
Not necessarily. While it may not be the Fansubbers job to help it's fans, they do have moderators doing that job for them. And often, Moderators are the ones who tend to act in such a way. And i don't know about anyone else, but i haven't been to big community message board, where there's one or two of them who developed a tendency to chew out new people for no reason. Granted, small message boards do not usually do that, but then again, i haven't been to all of them.
And yeah, i recently checked to see what is going on with that site (out of curiosity), and apparently, the site's been having that issue since last year, as far as i know, and yet they state that this issue was being resolved during March (a ways past the 19th), especially when they said:
Well, we've finally moved over.
we are going to give this new hardware a few days just to make sure everything works right then start adding on the upgrades and tweaks.
signups will be open soon and you all can look foward to some very nice additions to the site in the weeks to come.
may i be the first to say, WELCOME BACK BOXTORRENTS!
I still find it odd how people take their word for it. So i guess you were right, alot of these type of sites cannot be trusted.
Blue Lionheart- 04-18-2006
I still say that faq or not, there is no need to be an ass to people. If a person decides to chew out someone they've never met simply for asking a question, then that's the fault of the mod, not the guest, even if that answer is accessible somewhere other than in the channel. I mean, if I am working on a project for a college course, and my roommate knows the answer to a question I have, and I know that I could find it out if I went and got the book and looked it up, is it SO inconsiderate to say "Hey buddy, do you remember the answer to this?" I guess I just don't see why it's ok to be mean to people for being curious... If you are so irritated by people asking questions, then what you should do is make a special IRC channel that is password protected or something, and the only way to find the password is to read through the FAQ, otherwise you shouldn't get mad about people just walking in and asking. ;p LOL
BodyOrgan- 04-18-2006
Your roommate isn't getting the same question asked him by hundreds or thousands of people. Your solution to the problem is only temporary. They may read the FAQ, and it may satisfy them for a month, but eventually they all know the password, and just skip reading any updates to the FAQ.
If you want to know our solution. It was simply to password the channel and you don't get in unless you know one of us. This works pretty well, but we also have another channel just for us mods so we don't usually talk to others anyway. This solution also has it's flaws by the way.
Oh, and in an effort to make things as easy as possible for people we had provided bittorrent however we lost the ability recently and if you currently want our releases then you'll have to find a way into the IRC channel and talk to the bot. Hopefully one day we'll get bittorrent running again, but it's not a high priority at the moment.
Anyway, I'm not going to defend the fansubbers position any longer, because this is a neverending argument. I'm not trying to be mean, but it's the way things are, and I can understand the situation, and if you can't you'll just have to deal.
P.S. I know I kinda threw the last word in there, so if anyone wants the last word feel free to reply, but I'm going to leave it at your word.
ChibiShinigami- 04-26-2006
You'd be surprised...Tazmo's got a lot of people paying him for NarutoFanPlus and his manga site (directmanga.com) that is available only if you pay.
What can I say, some fans are just plain stupid........
(sorry if that offended anyone)
Funny thing....I recently found another website much like DM.org and has a huge chunk of their stuff and they are a -free- site. I'm pretty sure it ended up being a bunch of people who were seriously pissed off about the fact that DM.org is a huge fanrape and decided to take their idea and do their own site instead to help fans. It's not well known as far as I know though.
Wanna know what the site's called? Want a great laugh out of it? www.stoptazmo.com
I'd love to hear what he has to say about it. I remember when DM.org started long ago. I sent them a dirty email about the fact that they had basically stolen scans from other scanlation groups and gave them no credit whatsoever. Their reply? "Oh, well we got everything from IRC so we don't know anything about it. Too bad." I simple search will find you most of the groups who scanlated the stuff they have. On my second hard drive (haven't installed it to my new pc yet ><) I probably have all the official websites to all those scanlation groups. I alerted several of those groups (omanga, sakura-crisis, Be With You, etc) and I'm pretty sure they contacted them about it but nothing was done.
As far as the issues on American company ethics, episodes per volume, cost per episode, I've been royally screwed by American companies in both price and quality and I will only buy from those companies whenever they everything ass-cheap. I remember when Saiyuki was finally released by ADV after holding onto it for 3 years. The first two dvds were $20 a piece at Best Buy and had 5 episodes on it. I couldn't believe it was as cheap as it was. When volume 3 was released, I was there the day it came out and almost didn't buy it when i saw what they did. They dropped the episode content to 4 episodes per dvd and the price shot up $4. Since that day, the only dvds I've bought from ADV have been all under $10 when they do their mega super clearance. The other time they majorly screwed me was the uncut releases of Sailormoon they did of the first two seasons. If anyone has seen these...they know what I mean. $80 (cheapest I found it, it was more around $120 at most places) for the whole first season, subtitle only. The sound quality was horrific and the video quality was 3rd gen VHS fansub. I could buy better quality bootlegs for LESS even if the subtitles were in engrish.
I've also had times where some of my favorite series finally came out over here and found that characters' personalities were changed, storylines were changes, etc. US MangaCorp is notorious for this behavior. I also find this a lot in the manga I've bought here. I don't want to pick up something where Japanese teenagers are talking about Avril Lavenge (sp?) and Backstreet Boy. I want them talking about Utada Hikari and Larc~en~ciel like they were in the original text. I don't want things "americanized" for me. I'm not an idiot gaijin. I know not everyone feels this way and have heard "fans" say they don't give a crap about what was said in Japan originally cuz they could care less about Japan (I...just don't get that). I'm spoiled by the days when getting anime was the equivalent of a back alley drug deal only done in the back of a comic book store, when you did a search for anime on the web and you threw a party if you actually found something. So I get offended when anime is "bastardized" and due to so much it being done that way, I rarely buy anything anymore from American companies.
As far as Bleach and Naruto are concerned, I hope that the manga's continue to be scanlated. They've continued for so long after their licenses here so stopping anytime soon would make me cry. I've long ago stopped watching Naruto (the manga's so much better anyway) but I enjoy both the Bleach manga and anime but I can live without the anime being subbed. I'll probably end up buying it just because it's one of my top favs anyway. But hearing "soul reaper" instead of "shinigami" makes my flesh crawl.
Zero0079- 04-26-2006
But what if there is a working literal english translation. I could understand if they had that, since it would mean the same thing, so i wouldn't really let it phase me that much. But yeah, DVD's are getting to the point where people are just going to go to piracy to get their fix. But i'm sure when that happens, the prices will drop. One more thing. If this tazmo guy is still charging for subs from Naruto and Bleach, why doesn't anyone contact Funimation about it? That would really deal a death blow to that guy.
Andromeda- 04-26-2006
Your manga point is right. The majority of those who are buying the series that mention such artists know full and well who these artists are. We don't need them americanized.
ChibiShinigami- 04-26-2006
Your manga point is right. The majority of those who are buying the series that mention such artists know full and well who these artists are. We don't need them americanized. It just seems a little insulting at times. It's bad enough that other countries think Americans are lazy than to have foreign things americanized for us so we don't have to take a few extra minutes to look up who/what they are talking about. Some manga's have dictionaries in the back of them to help the readers which I think is a fantastic idea but there's just not enough of them doing that. And some anime series have done butchered translations to make it "less confusing". Like in Yami no Matsuei, US MangaCorp "translated" chants that had no translations. They were chants. >< It just seems a little silly to go that far instead of just putting "(chanting)" as the subtitle. So you can see how I'd be jaded by things like that.
Zero: I think the reason no one's contacting the companies about Tazmo is probably out of fear that FUNimation will attack all the other groups. It could backfire on the community as a whole rather than just him and his crew. Those of us who know about he's actions, just find other ways to look for stuff, and those who get screwed by him just learn the lesson to look before you leap. It should be a red flag enough that he's the only person charging for fansubs/scanlations on the net so far as we know. My friend got bit by him already but only because she wanted some of the manga series from DM.org so I gave her alternatives instead and now she's learned.
Andromeda- 04-27-2006
I really like the dictionary thing in the back. It's like educationg us and we could always use a little more education in our lives! And teaches about other cultures. And the whole chanting thing.. good lord, I think we all know that chanting is meant to be not understood. It's been used a lot of times in movies here in the US with no complaints. I can see it now. "Hey, does anyone know what that guy is saying in that chant? I think they should have at least subtitled it."
Tsunade-Hime- 04-27-2006
From one of my previous posts in this thread:
As for Dattebayo's smart remarks, most of them are directly pointed to Tazmo and his group at NarutoFan, not that Tazmo cares. He has manged to piss off several scanlating and fansub groups for CHARGING people to download the work they did and allow people free access to.
If you want to go thru the postings at www.stoptazmo.com in the "Bash Tazmo Thread" go right ahead! Needless to say he's made a lot of enemies.
Bottom line forum users: don't pay someone to download stuff that was created by others for free access to fans; donate to sites if you like, but don't pay for a special access.
If you want to read some "special rants", go to StopTazmo's Bash Tazmo thread...remember I warned you...
I've wanted to post on their forums, but those people scare me.
Tsunade-Hime- 04-27-2006
Andromeda, sorry for double posting.
This thread has gotten off topic (doesn't really matter to me, but since you're the admin/mod/boss just did not want to make you angry), so I have a suggestion; why not start a "Rant Here" topic on the forums where we could go on and on about all sorts of anime related stuff. Could be fun!
You could also move the posts from here to there that went off topic.
BTW BodyOrgan, I enjoyed your posts about fansub groups. AnimeNewsNetwork 's Answerman is currently running a contest called "Rants". I suggest you check out the rules and send in your fansub topic; you could win some cool box sets and stuff!
BodyOrgan- 04-27-2006
Are you talking about my position regarding fansub groups? I've never heard of this Answerman before.
