Godannar! Godannar!! Vol 1: DVD Review
Kick Ass!
by Andromeda
The union of Anna and Goh is a beautiful one. It was during a war, one in which the whole world was involved, fighting off alien beasts known as Mimetics. When the beasts lay waste to Japan, Anna gets caught up in the battle while trying to evacuate. Falling out of the blown hatch of the plane she's escaping disaster in, the giant mecha Dannar emerges from the rubble and saves her. It's a romantic tale of a teenage girl falling in love with the man who rescued her from danger, who winds up marrying him five years later.
This isn't just about the perfect union of man and woman though. Five years later, on the day of their wedding, a Mimetic attacks Japan and so Goh and Anna's mom have to leave the chapel to fight. And once again, seventeen year old Anna Aoi gets caught up in the fight. Stumbling upon a hidden top secret mecca known as Neo-Okusaer, Anna does her duty as a pilot wanna be and a wife and goes off to help her husband.
There is more than meets the with these two giant robots. These two mechas are companions with interlocking parts, partners. Goh, Anna, and their giant robots will perform the ultimate marriage of man, woman and machine to great Godannar! But it's because of all this that will have these two newlyweds butting heads so soon into their marriage.
Five years ago, during the fight that won the war, Goh lost his partner and his love who was also a pilot. With this new relationship with Anna, like any husband, he doesn't want her to become a pilot, even if it's been her dream since childhood. Can anyone blame him? He's already gone through the pain of loosing someone very dear to him. No man should have to go through that again. But, then again, marriage is an equal partnership, even if it involves fighting aliens.
Anna is bound and determined to become a pilot no matter what Goh throws at her during the tests. She's a superb athlete and has better hand-eye coordination than a lot of the men and woman who are already pilots. Like her mother says, Anna wasn't raised to be weak. With becoming a pilot, will she be able to do her wifely duties and finish her last year of school?
I'm not a huge fan of mecha animes, but every now and then one comes along and grabs a hold of me. Godannar reminds me a lot of G Gundam with the designs of the robots and the characters that pilot them. Each one has so much personality in the design. Like with G Gundam, other countries have These giant mechas as well which adds to the different personalities of those piloting them. To get the full effect of the characters and where they are from, I really suggest watching this anime dubbed. The Russian accents used sound great when coming from the two pilots from Russia. It just so happens, their mated Dannar is my favorite one. There's just something about a huge female shaped machine with breasts that get even bigger and jiggle when it merges with it's male partner that I find really amusing.
This is an action packed comedy that you can't miss out on. Godanar will satisfy the anime needs of those who like comedy and those who like giant robot anime. Oh, and how can I forget! There is plenty of fan-service, giving this a mature age rating. The females are big breasted and wear outfits that should be illegal. The man character Goh is a hunk. And this isn't something that has gone unnoticed by the other female characters, including Anna's mother.
So far, after having watched three episodes, the only problem I seem to have run into is the ending of episode two and the beginning of episode three. Episode one leaves you with a cliff hanger. Episode two though, doesn't tell you right away what happened. It opens some time later with the beginnings of another Mimetic fight. I was left sitting here in front of my computer saying OMG and wondering if the DVD skipped a whole episode. Thankfully all is revealed and no letter of my upset was written to it's creator.
Buy this anime! Share it with your friends! You won't regret it! For you video gamers who have a modded PlayStation 2, import the game! For those of us who don't, demand it a U.S. release!
DVD extras include Character Profiles, Mechanical Profiles, Godannar Key Words, and a "Top Secret Case File," plus clean opening animation, clean closing animation, and previews of upcoming ADV Films releases.

I've been curious about GoDanner since AIC started hyping it a couple of years back. Sounds like a show worth checking out, although I do wonder if it'll make it on US TV considering the elements it has going for it

Highly doubt that it will. And if it does, it ofcourse would be impossible to watch due to all the necessary and unnecessary butchering. But that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it on DVD.

I've seen most of the episodes fansubbed from AonE, and while I did enjoy it. It does remind me alot of Power Rangers.
