Hakugei – Legend of the Moby Dick Vol 1
Hakugei – Legend of the Moby Dick Vol 1 “There She Blows!” Written by Andromeda Ahoy maties! Come aboard and join Captain Ahab and his crew of whale hunters! Okay… I heard that groan. Or am I just remembering the one I let out when I opened the package from ADV that held this DVD. To me, I was lucky for not having had to read Moby Dick in school and I ever seen any of the movies they had made. Not even the one that Patrick Stewart was in. I love classics, but there is just something about that book that makes me want to stay away from it. But this telling of Moby Dick is far from boring. “The year 4699. A young adventurer on a desperate mission sets off to find Captain Ahab and his crew of outlaw whale hunters. Only Ahab can save his home planet from the most horrific beast known throughout the universe: Moby Dick. But first he will need to locate the fugitive Captain and his elusive crew. And if he finds them, will he pass muster to join the toughest crew of whale hunters in the galaxy? And will Ahab agree to risk it all for one more shot at the Great White?” This is a Sci-Fi twist to the classic tale of Moby Dick. Not only is it set in the future, but in space. Yes, I know… there are no whales in space. Or are there? In this story, whales are actually ships abandoned in space, left to drift among the stars. One of the places that these whales seem to drift close to is Nantucket Nebula. This also happens to be where Captain Ahab and his crew reside. For those of us who live in the United States, we are all familiar to where Nantucket is. Let me tell you, Nantucket Nebula is nothing like the Nantucket we know. This place is where the outlaws go to hide, where the low lives live, and the black market thrives. This is where our young adventurer, Lucky Luck, finds Captain Ahab and joins his crew of whale hunters. Since derelict ships are the whales, which makes the whale hunters salvage teams or scavengers. Lucky Luck comes from Moad, a place where a rebellion has broken out against the government who has depleted the planets natural resources. So, joining the crew of the Lady Whisker is just a way for her to get close to the infamous Captain Ahab. Lucky Luck hopes to persuade the Captain to come to Moad and help her brother out, the lead of this rebellion. At first, I really wasn’t too interested in watching this anime. The art wasn’t the most impressive that I’ve ever seen, but it was still good. There was plenty of detail when it came to the ships and to the different attitudes and walks of life of the crew. By the time I had gotten to the third episode the story had pulled me in. I found myself paying much more attention to what I was watching and yelling at anyone who got in the way of the TV or tried to talk to me. Captain Ahab certainly isn’t like the captain is in the classic. Or at least how I’ve always thought him to be from what I’ve hard about it. He’s friendlier and much funnier. The crew even picks on him from time to time. Strong and gentle at the same time, as Lucky Luck puts it. This character is definitely the key to enjoying this series. I’m actually eager to see the next volume just because of him. Not to mention more action and more characters will be introduced. So, for those of you who like space adventurers and twists on classic stories, grab yourself a copy of Hakugei – Legend of the Moby Dick. You won’t be disappointed. But don’t try to use it to write a book report for. Licenser: ADV Studio: Image K Length: 125 mins Retail Price: (US) $29.98 Release Date: 11.29.05
