Jinki:Extend Vol 1
Jinki:Extend Vol 1 A Girl and Her Big F’in Robot. By Andromeda Aoba is a girl who has a passion for robots and model building. She has even won an award for model building, though it had to be under her dead grandfather’s name for the contest. Still, Aoba couldn’t be a happier girl until one day her grandmother dies, leaving her all alone. What could make things worse for poor Aoba? Well, getting kidnapped could make things worse. When Aoba wakes from being kidnapped, she finds herself in a strange place. But luck would have it that she is given the opportunity to escape. Not knowing where she is or if she’s even in Japan anymore, she runs blindly into the woods until coming upon the most glorious thing, a robot. A real live robot. It’s the most amazing sight to Aoba and she forgets all about running away from her kidnapper. After going on a joy ride that nearly becomes her death, Aoba finds out why she was kidnapped. Aoba’s mother wants her, but it’s not from a mother’s love for her daughter. It is the inheritance that Aoba’s grandparents have left her with which fuels Aoba’s mother desire for her daughter. Aoba has long ago stopped loving this woman and refuses to call her mom. Being forced to live with her mother only causes Aoba’s hatred to grow stronger. Now living at some base, Aoba finds out that these giant robots are large weapons called Jinki, which are man made. They fight against large mechanoid weapons called “Ancient Jinki” that appear around the Venezuelan table mountains. These robots are Aoba’s passion and she wants more than anything to pilot one of these man-made Jinkis. But there are only a few who can pilot a Jinki, those with a special power that allows them to interact with the Jinki as naturally as if they were physically one with the unit. As luck would have it, Aoba is one of the few special ones with the gift, a cognate. Now she must prove herself worthy of being one of the two member team that pilots the Moribito-2. But will this cause some jealousy within the cognate group at Angel base since she’s the rookie? We all know how young girls can let their jealousy run rampant. And what about this group called the Hachi Shojin that hunts down cognates? Will Aoba have to face them and defend her life? Just who is the Hachi Shojin? I loved the art and coloring of this series. All the characters were so vibrant except for the few who were the ones you wanted to dislike, like Aoba’s mother who seemed to be drawn a bit on the dark side. A lot of detail was spent on the man-made Jinki giving them such character. I’ve only seen three episodes and can’t wait to get farther into the series to see what other types of Jinkis pop up. From the start of the first episode it seems as if more larger and elaborate ones appear for Aoba and the others to fight. ADV and the voice actors they picked for this series did quite a good job with the dubbing. All the voices seemed to fit perfectly with the characters. This was another great job from them and I hope the rest of the series turns out as good as the first three episodes have. There are quite a number of extras included with the first volume of Jinki:Extend. Interview with Fumiko Orikasa (Aoba), Takuma Takewaka (Ryohei) and Kazuhiro Wakabayashi (Sound Director). On Air Opening 1. On Air Close. Clean Opening Animation. Clean Closing Animation. Venezuela Location Notes. Glossary of Terms. ADV Previews. DVD Credits. Character Relationship Chart. Text Interview with Fumiko Orikasa (Aoba) and Naoto Hosoda (Character Designer). The two extras that I really liked were the Venezuela Location Notes and Glossary of Terms. It’s nice to know what cognate and Jinki mean. Licenser: ADV Animation Production: Feel Length: 125mins Retail: $29.98 Availability: 09/05/06
