Just starting out
I run an anime room (its small but growing) at a gaming convention in Columbia, SC, and have started attending other anime cons. I love seeing the cosplay and would love to try and start introducing cosplay to RoundCon. Problem is I have no idea where to start! among a few other small things. I am not excactly skinny, mind you I am not huge either, just well nice and fluffy :) , 5'11\" so I am not short either, I am shy about my body but that is nothing new I always have been even was when i was skinny as a rail. So in short, I see alot of neat anime characters I would like to try but I just do not fit the image of them, and I think what I like the least about cosplay is seeing an, hmmm how to say it politely, out of sync representation of a character and I do not want to be one of them. So there are my issues any suggestions on where to start? any places to go for info? ideas on how to choose what to cosplay? Oh the one issue I dont think I will have is in the sewing and putting it together department. Between myself and my mother-in-law we have plenty of sewing experiences, we both do rev war reinactments and have to hand sew all the cloths for it, and she was a costume seamstress for a theater for a good bit. So we know how to draft patterns and all that happy stuff. Any thanks for the time! -Ruby

Oh, so now I find that out. Had the worst time sewing sleeves onto my costume for AFO. Hmm... there are a lot of costumes that some of us fluffy ones shouldn't attempt, but there are still some that we can pull off and it not look bad. You should never fall into the Costume Nazi line when it comes to cosplaying. It's Costume Playing, plain and simple. It's for fans to have fun, not to be exactly like the character they adore. But I do hear you about some of the body types REALLY not matching the costume. Like, Sailor Shamu. I know, that's bad of me, but I didn't give her the name. Some of the easier costumes would be school uniforms. Doesn't matter what colors or if you're going for a specific school. Throw on a colored wig and you're anyone in the school cast! I've done that quite a few times. The skirts were the easiest thing to make. This year for AFO, I did Mrs Oosona from Kiki's Delivery Service. Yeah yeah, I hear you saying, \"Who?\" The pregnant baker's wife... lol. That was a very easy costume to do. http://www.cosplay.com/ Try here. But don't say, \"Hey, I'm fluffy, what's a good costume.\" It turns into three pages about you needing to loose weight... trust me.. I've been there with this. Look hard enough and you could probably find my post that lead to that... lol.

OH MY GOD! I LOVE COSPLAY! @O@ *faints* I'm currently working on like 22+ costumes at the moment. Man. My first cosplay was Kyuzo from Samurai 7. I picked that cosplay just out of extreme fangirlism for the character, honestly. That and it was a week before Anime Weekend Atlanta and I was DYING to cosplay, Hahahha. And ever since then I've found my kind of niche in the cosplay world, I cosplay as the often andro bishounen males most of the time now. So my advice is to pick a character you LIKE first and see how it turns out. If you like that style try and branch out to similar characters from there. I think you shoudl like the character first off, if not their personallity at least their outfit XD <3 And what's this RoundCon? I had no idea there were any kind of cons in SC. If you need a cosplay buddy for that con I will DEFINATELY be there and cosplay with you! I love cosplay so much zomg. <3333

I've never been much into cosplay, other than just the whole male appreciation of girls dressing up in cute stuff thingy. :D But....my oldest daughter (13) is desperate for me to... 1). Take her to a con... 2). Let her cosplay as Sakura Haruno... She has this extreme fascination with Naruto, Bleach, Prince Of Tennis, and Ouran High School Host Club, bordering on insanity! :)

So we should all get together and hit a Con!
