Karas: The Prophecy
Karas: The Prophecy By Andromeda In Shinjuku, there seems to be a series of mass murders with one survivor. Stories of Kappas and youkais are on everyone’s lips. But isn’t this the stuff for superstitious people? Is this something that the police can really investigate? There are two realms that occupy the same space, the human realm and the realm of spirits. There is one that is the mediator between the two to keep things pleasant. When a spirit runs rampant in the human realm, it is the Karas that punish those who do wrong. But what would happen if the Karas, protector of humans, healer of spirits, were to become bad? When ex-Karas, Ekou, kills the one who replaced him, chaos befalls Shinjuku. Those that follow him, youkai who have been cybernized, now suck the life forces out of the humans. What will the fact of this city be if no one stops them and the self proclaimed Lord, Ekou? Yurine calls forth a new Karas to help in this battle. Otoha must now not only help heal the spirits that have become sick but battle Ekou’s servants. He’s not alone though. There is one, a rouge youkai that is bent on destroying those that serve Ekou. But he’s being pursued by a detective known as Kure who thinks he’s the one murdering all these people. Prepare to have your eyes assaulted by a dazzling array of colors as ex-Karas and new Karas fight one another. It’s another hybrid using CG for the fighting and action scenes. I don’t think the fighting scenes would have been pulled of so well if it had not been done in CG. The colors and flashes of light as the Karas and youkai fight are quite amazing. Visually, this six episode OVA is absolutely amazing. Story wise, I had no clue what was going on. All I could figure out was there’s a guy who kills another guy in the opening sequence and he’s the bad guy. Then it goes on with some guy on the train and people getting murdered in the bathroom, which is funny because Kure is in there using the bathroom at the time. By the second episode, I still wasn’t sure what was going on. If I had not read up on Karas after that, I wouldn’t have any clue as to what the story was really about. I’m sure more gets explained after the second episode, but I haven’t watched that far yet, so I can’t say as to whether the story really sucks or not. It could just be slow. Even so, I still highly recommend this OAV on its visual stimulation alone. Licenser: MANGA Production: Tatsunoko Length: 90 mins Retail: $19.98 (US) Availability: 04.25.06
