Easter Sunday is a time to confess your sins, and D’Eon does just that. After saying cruel things to Anna, D’Eon tries to make up for it by apologizing and inviting her to church. He has a heavy heart because of recent events and feels the need to confess his sins to the priest for not burying the women he has killed, even though they aren’t allowed a proper burial.
After leaving the church with Anna, their carriage happens upon a scene of the poor lining the streets. It is said that the aristocrats turn a blind eye to the poor desolate souls. It seems as if some of them feel the need to stop a carriage and demand help. The man inside though is someone that D’Eon and the others are looking for, Vorontsov, the Russian.
After giving chase and losing him, D’Eon meets with the others and they figure Vorontsov is fleeing the country and was originally planning on fleeing by river to the sea to catch a boat. Being caught while trying to flee, they deduce that he will change his plan and go by land instead. But what meaning did Vorontsov’s parting words have? Was there a traitor? It’s just another twist for the knights to figure out.
Failing to capture the Russian, D’Eon and the others are given a new Mission. They are to go to Russia. But before accepting their assignment, the four of them must bid those they hold dear farewell, for they only have two choices. As Knights of the King, they will either be killed for declining the mission presented to them, or risk their life on the mission.
Before leaving, D’Eon decides that he needs to see the Queen, to find out what his sister wants from him. With her help, D’Eon wills himself to become Lia. They find out that the Royal Psalms have been stolen and that she wants vengeance. Before returning to himself, Lia also mentions that there was a traitor, but doesn’t say whom.
With this knowledge, D’Eon and the others leave France and head to St. Petersburg, Russia. But the trip is not without it’s events. The hunters soon become the hunted as their journey no longer remains a secret. They must hurry and some how see the Empress.
In this second volume of Le Chevalier D’Eon, there are so many plot twists, so many questions and not enough answers. It makes you want to see the next episode, to find out who the traitors are and what other obstacles they will run into. There are still a few things from the first volume that they don’t answer, but they come up to remind you that you don’t know. With all of this going on, the creators managed not to stuff too much into an episode to confuse the watcher.
Le Chevalier D’Eon is a series that will pull you into its world of history and fantasy.
Extras on the DVD include Historical Notes, Crossed Swords & Cross-dressing: A Photographic Profile, Conversations with Knights: Commentary with the Swordsmen of Le Chevalier, The Royal Mystique: Commentary with the Royal Women of Le Chevalier, Japanese Promo Event, Clean Opening, Clean Closing, ADV Previews and DVD Credits.
I do recommend listening to the commentaries. They are really good. In the one with the Royal Women of Le Chevalier, they ask the same question as I do. What’s up with that skull? They also talk about the cross-dressing photographic profile, which is amusing.
