Loveless Written by Andromeda Aoyagi Ritsuka is a troubled kid. The only person he was close to, his brother, is dead, having died mysteriously. To make matters worse, he has to start classes at a new school. Okay, that’s not so bad, but when there is a bunch of giggling girls who want to get to know the new cute boy, it can be very irritating. So irritating that he hurts the feelings of one of the girls and makes her cry. This really seems as if it’s just a normal life for someone. We all lose someone close to us at some point and we have all started a new school sometime during our school days. So what makes Ritsuka’s story so different? The day that he meets Soubi. Soubi used to be a close friend of his brother, Seimei. When finding this out, Ritsuka wants to make memories with this adult. While hanging out at the park with this, well, stranger who seems to be a little too friendly, two other children appear. Strange things start to happen and Ritsuka finds out his true name… Loveless. For whatever reason his brother was killed and whatever he was involved in concerning the organization “Seven Moons”, now Ritsuka was involved. Before he can find out answers though, a fight ensues and Soubi asks Ritsuka to be his sacrifice. Confused and afraid, he agrees. Using some strange magic called “Spell” he defeats the other fighter and sacrifice, sending them back to the one who sent them. Ritsuka now has more than a sixth grade boy can handle, but amazingly he does so. One of his classmates has a crush on him, oddly enough the girl he made cry. There’s Soubi who claims not to be into little boys, but loves Ritsuka. His mother abuses him. Some organization wants to destroy Soubi and take him away. There are questions about his brother’s death that no one will answer. And to top it all off… one of his teachers, who hasn’t lost her ears, is a little too concerned about his welfare. I bet you are a bit curious about the whole, “hasn’t lost her ears” part that I mentioned. In this story, all the children have a second set of ears, like cat and dog ears along with a tail. When they lose their virginity, they lose their ears and tail. When Ritsuka first meets Soubi, he asks if this earless adult is going to take away his ears. Not knowing anything about this title at first, my friends and I had a good time speculating as to why one would lose their ears. The story is laid out so that with each episode you are left with questions compelling you to watch the next episode. The art is a wonderful eye pleaser and is done by Yun Kouga who also did Earthian. I found it to be much more beautiful than Earthian. But I suppose that comes from new verses old. The characters are definitely drool worthy. I do have to mention that this is a bit on the Yaoi side. But guys, please don’t let this turn you off from this great story.
