Hey!
I'm sorry I haven't made it to either of the meetups!
I currently don't have a car, so I'm kinda always waiting around for a ride all the time. hahahhahaha.
I really wanted to come to today's meetup but a) don't have a ride and b)I haven't met everyone yet so I'm kinda like....awkward? I dunno hahhaha XD
Evaunit01berserk- 12-02-2007
ah the bain of all anime lovers, awkardness......
eventually i got tired of it, threw it out the window and said the hell with it, i dont give a damn what people think about me liking anime.
Andromeda- 12-02-2007
lol, I'd have to agree, we are all a bit in that awkward stage in the beginning.
Xela- 12-02-2007
Couldn't make it to the meetup this time. Was wondering what was shown.
Evaunit01berserk- 12-03-2007

Wait, we have a Greenville chapter.... AGAIN?
Anyway, last time we had a Greenville chapter, it kinda got unstable, and we barely had enough members to constitute a group. What we did to remedy that, was merge what we had with the Greenville members (which was just me and some other person... i think), and the Spartanburg group. Anyway, the best thing to do, is of course advertise. I find it best to go to places like video game stores and maybe some stores that cater to certain groups that might have an interest in the subject at hand. One good place to start is a video game store called "Video game Cavern". I believe it's in Woodruff road. I guess you can work out a deal with the store owner, he'll probably let you put up some fliers. That might churn up some public interest. I'm certain that there are people from the old group that might still have an interest in participating in meetups again, but it's still not guaranteed that they'll show up. Also, one good way to help break the ice is to hold a few meetups in venues, such as a restaurant. Having a neutral area kinda helps break awkwardness, since it's not like going to someones house that you don't know. Eventually, when trust is built, just break from using venues, and start hosting them in houses or wherever you see fit. Good luck.

i think the main problem with the old greenville chapter is......
i never heard about it
in my 4 years of living down here, i didnt even know it existed.
also spartanburg is a distance to go.
as far as people "being nervous", they are going to have to get the shyness out
my first anime club was in baltimore, someones private house, and that club was flourishing with new members almost each meet.
one thing i learned over my years is, if you dont reach out and just keep in your shell, your missing alot of fun.
i also think a bigger group in the public would actually be more intimidating.
but that dosent mean im not looking around for more "accomodating" venues.
there used to be a place called Haven Games on woodruff rd, it went out of business almost 3 years ago

Yeah, it was pretty obscure. We started with Anime.meetup.com, and worked our way to becoming South Carolina Anime. We all used to meet at Atlanta bread company (i believe that was the correct name) once a month, and discussed what are we going to do as a group. Back then, people from Spartanburg and other towns met with us, but after a while things became harder to do, and members started to leave (a few left to pursue their life goals, and others weren't getting along with the rest). Andromeda here started to get around to making South Carolina Anime, and it all ended up here. Now I've managed to host a few meetings at my house (yes, here in Greenville), and had people show up, so it's not really impossible. You just gotta keep in mind that a few members have to take time off of work, so taking time off of work is doable, but only in small doses. Granted, i had help with some people giving me rides here and there to the meet ups from time to time, so it worked out well. What i suggest is that you keep in mind that South Carolina Anime already had a meet up, and that Greenville members are more or less considered members of the Spartanburg chapter as well (since both groups are too small to be separate groups thus far), so technically we already had a Christmas meet up. But that's not to say that nobody's willing to show up. It's just that it's kinda hard to get people to take time off to do this.
Also, I've noticed that there is someone in the Greenville group that doesn't have a means of transportation. If you really want some people to show up, try offering them alternatives or accommodate them by offering them a ride (thats what Geoffrey and Andromeda did for me). Not only would that build trust, but it will also have more people show up, since it shows that you're hell bent on having a meet up. Also, it takes some patience to gather members. It didn't work out over night for us. It took a while, and we're still a very small group, but were getting there. As for the shyness, yeah, it's really based on opinion, so you'll have mixed reactions (with some people being eager to show up, and others not so), but that's still to be seen, since we haven't had a meet up here in Greenville since last year, i believe. Anyway, just don't give up, you'll get people to show up eventually. And it hasn't been the first meet up in Greenville, so interest is there. What we gotta do is advertise.

lol, I yeah, I remember the first time I suggested doing something as a group. I got yelled at by the head of the meetup.com group. My thoughts were, "Well hell, someone needs to get off their butts and do something. If you're not, I will!" We started by meeting at restaurants to get to know each other, then we started meeting at Converse and then at my house. Seems no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the Converse group to mix with the SCA group. But in the end, here we are!
Zero0079- 12-31-2007
Yeah, you're still with that group, right? I figured that they might have broken up by now. We lost a lot of members from that group. Some never showed up, and others showed up once, and we never saw them again.
Evaunit01berserk- 12-31-2007
i think its also a matter of ego's too.
im in no way in competition with andromeda's group, but for example, i had a member join up that seemed a little "bitter" that i started a group before him.
my answer to that.....dude, i just want an anime club in greenville that i can get too in 5-10 minutes after i get off of work, no one has the balls to start one so im just going to start one myself.
the intrest is there, 20 some people signed up on meetup, the participation however....is a bit on the rare side. i get alot of "can i be assistant director!?!?!?" but they are the people who i never hear from again.
yeah im not giving up that easily, but if we paper the town and still not get a response after 5 months....might be a sign that greenville just wasent meant to have an anime club.
the papering of the town hasent started yet....holidays sorta delayed that :)
