Papuwa: Vol 1 -- Wild Things Papuwa: Vol 1 – Wild Things
By Andromeda
Once, on an unknown southern island, a battle was waged over two mysterious stones, one red and one blue. The Blue Stone controls desire, and its power created the Blue Clan. And the Red clan that inherited the power of the Red Stone was filled with the light of hope. But we’re not here to talk about that battle, but what happens four years later after it ended.
Somewhere far away there is a tall dark tower, and within the tower is the sleeping.... no, not princess, but young boy who’s been asleep for four years. One day, within his dreams, he heard a voice, a voice telling him to wake. When he did, the tower shook, telling all that were within that he had awoken, along with his powers.
Breaking free from his captors, the young man, Kotaro, heads for the sea, looking for an island that the voice told him to find, only to run into trouble. Behind him, not only is the Ganma army helicopter pursuing him, but a large school of fish… a large school of strange fish, with legs and wearing fishnet pantyhose. But that’s the least of his worries.
After getting swallowed up inside a whirlpool, the young pretty boy finds himself falling towards the island that he’s been looking for, and this is the last thing he remembers before waking up, smelling something.. fishy. The inhabitants of Papuwa Island are strange creatures that make you question your sanity. Imagine waking up to a large transvestite fish wearing fishnet pantyhose and his snail wife. No, this is not the Twilight Zone.
That’s just the tip of the strange inhabitants and events on Papuwa Island, and it’s all just a bit traumatic for Kotaro. So traumatic that he ends up with amnesia. But this is a good thing. Liquid, an ex-Ganma army member recognizes the boy and knows that he possess an amazing power, a power used in the battle four years ago. To keep the boy from remembering, Liquid changes Kotaro’s name on his underwear to Rotaro. I mean, why not believe what your name is if it’s written in your underwear, right?
Every adventure for Kotaro is a bizarre trip in a world of transvestite fish, fruity pink dinosaurs and hallucination-inducing poisonous mushroom angels. Every episode has some quirky adventure that will have you chuckling or downright laughing. Then again, if you watch it dubbed, it’s even more hilarious listening to the dialog and the voices. As a matter of fact, I recommend that you watch it dubbed.
Where else can you get ex-army maids, transvestite fish, snails giving birth, gigantic mushrooms who keep telling you to eat them, large pink dinosaurs that eat themselves, an army full of guys who are off their rockers, and a pretty boy brat who tries to avoid being eaten by the locals? Only on Papuwa Island.
