Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Super Dimension Fortress Macross Upon The Shoulders Of Giants Written by Andromeda “2009. Ten years of furious conflict and frenzied construction have turned an alien wreck into a human triumph: the colossal space battleship Macross. On the day of the ship’s launch, the world waits with bated breath to witness mankind’s next giant leap. Hovering above the planet, though, the Zentradi, a merciless warrior race, seek to advance their agenda of destruction and conquest. When long-dormant systems aboard the Macross suddenly fire upon the alien fleet, the ship meant to preserve humanity may become its undoing. A war of attrition erupts, taking mankind across the solar system and beyond in a fight to justify its existence!” From the people who brought us the uncut version of Gatchaman comes the uncut version of Macross. ADV knows what to give their fans. We want our anime uncut! For those of us who grew up with Battle of the Planets and Robotech, who later found out what anime was, we wanted our classics to be given to us the way they were meant to be. And yes, I’m old enough to have watched those on TV when I was a kid. Roy Focker is a fighter pilot for the United Nations Forces and is something of a ladies man. Hikaru Ichijo is a teenage boy and friends with Roy, who was a stunt pilot for Hikaru’s dad’s air circus. On the day of the Macross’ launch, Roy invites Hikaru to the ceremonies. Shortly after arriving, things get a little hectic. Hikaru finds himself piloting a fighter jet without knowing what it’s fully capable of. When he’s shot down, he finds himself in quite a jam until one of the crewmembers of the Macross helps him out. Following her instructions, Hikaru turns the plan into a Robot. Hikaru isn’t the only surprised by this. Landing in the city and wrecking a few buildings, the civilians find it amazing that the plane did this. But poor Hikaru doesn’t know how to control it and winds up causing more destruction while trying to move out of the way of a van headed for the shelter. Thankfully Roy comes to his rescue and guides him into transforming the plane yet again. Now it’s something caught between a plane and a robot making it much easier for Hikaru to control. Poor Hikaru though, his troubles aren’t over yet. The alien force manages to invade the city, putting any civilians left at risk. It’s when Hikaru fights to save a young woman from being killed that he finds out the harsh realities of war. When I first put my hands on this DVD, I kind of didn’t want to review it. My thoughts were, “Oh god it’s old, it’s a space anime, and there’s transforming planes into robots”. Old space adventure animes haven’t always been my favorite to watch. Unlike Gatchaman, I had not seen enough episodes of Robotech when I was younger to have it leave an impression on my mind. I even waited until the last minute to do the review for this. To my surprise though, I really enjoyed the first three episodes. It reminded me a lot of an older Gundam series and Gatchaman combined. The pace was quick, but I never got lost with what was going on. The first three episodes leave you curious as to who these aliens really are and where the ship Macross comes from. That’s enough to make me want to see more. I like the flaws added in, making the humans seem human, with problems of their own. For instance, when the Macross tries to take off the gravity devices rip out from the ship’s hull. For those who grew up loving this series, you’ll really enjoy this treat. For those of us new to the Macross saga and love watching the Gundam animes or other space adventure involving robots, aliens, and fighting, you’ll enjoy this series as well. For those of us, like myself, who’ve seen Macross 0, please don’t expect it to be so eye-catching. Remember, this is the original Macross, created back in 1982.
